September 22: On this day in 1967, The Beatles appeared on the cover of Time magazine.
The accompanying article codified the position of the Establishment media realized that year: that The Beatles were at the forefront of “rock” as an art form. As with so much else, they were late to the party by about a year but it didn’t matter much, being just one more unasked for plaudit thrown the group’s way.
The cover graphic was by artist Gerald Scarfe. Officially Mr. Jane Asher since 1981 (though they produced their first child some years earlier), he’s best known for the animation done on behalf of Pink Floyd he’s produced, particularly for The Wall. An example is posted here. ==> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CS_FCbQ-okM
